在Toastmasters 2nd Officer Training 裡,Div. E 請來了Div. A Director, Angel Li,
Never Give up in Your Toastmasters Journey,她做得到,你一樣可以做得到!!
This is an inspiring workshop in the 2nd Officer Training of Division E, District 67. The workshop trainer was Angel Li, Div. A Director. She shared her 8-year Toastmasters journey with us. Please watch the video to see how Toastmasters turned a shy, introvert student into a confident speaker and how Toastmasters benefited her on her professional career.
Soda Cans (C7 Speech by John Lo, Speech objective: Research
Your Topic)
A can of
soda. It’s just what you need to brighten up your day. It’s a must-have when partying
with friends. And when you want to make a toast but couldn’t get wine, soda cans
got your back. Filled with liquid happiness, and a whole bunch of ingenious
design. Ingenious? Why yes! A soda can may seem like nothing compared to your
cars, your computers, or your smartphones. But it is no less a product of
engineering. Whoever invented the soda can didn’t just sit in his bathtub and
yelled “Eureka!” No. Every part of this can was meticulously designed by men.
First, let’s take a look at
its shape. It’s a cylinder. Nothing special there, or is it? We’re so used to
seeing these cans in our everyday lives, so we don’t really question why it’s
made this way. Why do you suppose they chose a cylinder? Why not put the soda
in a ball? A ball has the least surface area, which means it’s cheaper to
produce. Plus, a ball has no corners, meaning it has no weak points, making it
easier to transport. It is the perfect container strength-wise and cost-wise! So
why isn’t this can made in the shape of a ball? Why not? Well, it turns out when
you try to stack them up for transportation, they leave too much empty space in
between. 26 percent to be exact. Not exactly cost-efficient. Besides, the
container easily rolls off the table. Customers are not going to like that. So,
if not a ball, what then? Well, how about a box? Stacked boxes leave no empty
space, right? That is true. But a box has corners and a much larger surface
area, so now we’re sacrificing the strength of the container and the low-cost
of production. So, what did the people who invented soda can do? Well, they
compromised. They took the best of the ball and the box, and put them together.
And so we have the cylinder! From the top, it’s a circle; from the side, it’s a
rectangle. It is easily stacked, creating only 9 percent of empty space when
tightly packed. And it requires less material than a box.
The second genius
of the soda can lies in the stay-on tab. I’m talking about this little thing
right here. When you open a soda can, it seems like you’re doing one thing. But
what you’re actually doing is two thing: the <pssch> and the <pop>.
That <pssch> you just heard is made by the pressurized gas leaving the
can. You see, on the top of the can right here, there is a little rivet
securing the tab onto the can. When you lift that tab, it acts like a second
class lever, with the fulcrum to one side; and the load in the middle. So by
lifting the tab, you’re actually lifting the rivet: the rivet being the load,
and the tip of the tab being the fulcrum. When you apply enough force, the
rivet pops up, venting the air inside the can, thereby removing the pressure inside.
And now we enter the second phase, the <pop>. The moment the can goes <pssch>,
the tab changes into a first class lever, with the fulcrum in the middle and
the load at the side. Now, the rivet is the fulcrum, and the can’s lid is the
load. When you pull the tab forward, the tab pushes down on the scored part of
the can’s lid. And…<pop>the can is opened. You might be wondering: “What
is the point of venting the air? Why the <pssch>?” The answer to that
question is, a can that is not vented has a pressure of 2 to 3 atmospheric
pressure inside. Without venting the air, you would need to exert more force to
open the can, therefore the tab would need to be a lot bigger, and thus much
more expensive.
You see, nothing about this
can was randomly chosen. So the next time you drink a can of soda, don’t just
chug it down. Take a closer look at what you’re holding in your hand. It may
not seem like much, but this is the product that went through generations of
evolution. It is the brainchild of human ingenuity. True. It’s no rocket
science. The soda can was not designed with aerodynamics in mind. It didn’t
save lives or push the frontier of human technologies. But it did revolutionize
a part of our lives, however small that part may be. Thank you.

| Vicky Cheng
Life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.
Who Am I? (C1 Ice Breaker Speech by Vicky Cheng)
Hi, everyone, it’s been one and a
half years, and it’s finally my turn to introduce myself.
Have you ever written down your
dream when you were little?
Do you remember what your answer
was?
My answer was: I want to be a
teacher when I grow up.
Because I didn’t know any job I could
do but being a teacher.
Am I a teacher now? Am I doing my
“dream” job?
Let me tell you my story.
In 1997, my major was Culinary Management.
Am I a chef or a manager now? No. After being graduated from the vocational
high school. I asked myself: Do I like to be an employee in a restaurant or a hotel
in my whole life? No. I want to know what I can do in my future. I want to have
another way, another possibility.
In 1998, I chose my second major,
History, at Fju Catholic University. After four years of study, and one and a
half years as a part-time student in Academia Sinica中央研究院,
I was sure I didn’t want to be a history researcher, even though I really liked
to read history.
After several years of working
experience. I chose my third major, teaching Chinese as a Second Language in
2007. Then I got my Master’s degree, and got married at the same time.
After that, I became a housewife
and a home cook in America with my husband. I also started my small business
there; I sold lunch boxes for Taiwanese students in the college station, Texas.
What am I doing now?
I am a student counselor at NTNU.
My students call me “老師”.
In my past 35 years, I have built
three specialties. And I really become a
teacher.
In the end, I want to share this quote
from the movie, Forest Gump: “Life was like a box of chocolates, you never know
what you are going to get.”
C1 (Ice Breaker Speech)
C1 (Ice Breaker Speech)
President, Toastmaster
of the Day, dear members and welcomed guests, good afternoon. Today I would
like to introduce myself. My English name is Ivy. My Chinese name is Chen
Yahui. My hometown is in Tienzhon, Chunghwa County. Now I live in Luzhu
District, near Nankan.
Since I was young,
I have been very interested in learning English. Hollywood Movies, TV drama series,
English songs were my faithful companions to get through my lonely days. After
graduation from the junior high school, I left my hometown to study in a 5-year
junior college in Kaohsiung. My major was international trade. I think that I made
a right choice to study this field as I like to learn English. For me, it has
been such a pleasant experience to communicate and build relationship with the
people from other countries through business.
After graduation
from junior college, my first job was working at a customs broker in Taichung
City. I had to check the Letter of Credit for our customers and prepare invoice,
packing list, and other shipping documents. The first job was very important for
me because I applied what I learned at school and put into practice. I worked
very hard and often worked overtime without extra pay. But it's rewarding
because I did learn a lot through hard working.
My second job was
a sales assistance in a small manufacturer in Taichung. Over there, I had the
chance to actually handle a lot of practical business affairs, like making
quotations, placing orders, arranging shipping procedures. But there were not
many chances to use English.
After working with
this manufacturer for one and half year, I got a job in a famous footwear
company, Skechers. I was the secretary to a QC manager from the USA. I grasped
this wonderful chance and practiced talking in English as much as possible with
my foreign colleagues. My English speaking ability was improved a lot during
this period.
In 1997, my boyfriend,
who is now my husband, said that his boss would like to invite me to work as
the jobsite secretary for his company in Mailiao. This job was to be the
communication bridge between my Taiwanese colleagues and our client’s team, who
was formed by German engineers and a lot of Filipino workers. Although they
were not native English speakers, I had the chance to listen to their strange accent.
Therefore, my English listening ability was greatly improved. I think that was why
I was so lucky to get my present job when I moved to Taoyuan with my husband in
1998. Since then, I have been working for this road construction machinery company
for more than 17 years.
In 2002, I already
had two daughters. But after spending too much time on my little kids, I became
unconfident of myself. I decided to sign up the GEPT-General English
Proficiency Test, high-intermediate-level. But where could I practice English?
My classmates introduced Toastmasters Club to me. As soon as I knew Toastmaster
Club, I fell in love with this wonderful club. I enjoyed the chances to
practice and listen to English in this club.
A few months later,
I successfully passed GEPT test. I also got high grades on the following TOEIC
exam.
To make sure that
my professional knowledge was not out of date, I attended the examination of
International trade Certification. It turned out that my grades ranked the top one
percent among more than six thousand attendants of that year. In 2006, after
spending 3 years study on Sunday classes, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in
Business.
During my spare
time, I like reading, cooking and baking with my daughters. For outdoor
activities, my family and I often go camping and traveling during holidays.
Two years ago, my
daughters were big enough, so I came back to join Toastmasters Club. I hope
that I can continue to grow and learn in this excellent environment. In
addition, recently I signed up a book reading club with my daughters'
parents.
For me, learning
is a never ending journey. I would like to share one of my favorite sayings
with you: "We do not stop learning and playing because we are old; we become
old because we stop learning and playing."
So Let's learn and play together in Toastmasters Club!!

7/25的YZU Toastmasters Meeting中,我們來了一位Longtan Club 的嘉賓Eva Yang,她的Vocal Variety與Body Language 生動有趣,並且也把握C4 演講的目標:How to Say it。
by Eva Yang
[Opening]-drama first
“Good evening, Dr. Lee. I’m Eva, Yang. I am
from Longtan Toastmasters… Nice to meet you. ” --shy--
“Hi~ Eva, well… Nice to meet you. ”
The biggest problem for Taiwanese to learn
social skills is that we are lack of self-confidence. Mostly, we find ourselves
not so charming, not so intelligent, and even not so professional on the specific
issue. Thus, Silence is gold. We choose to close our mouths all the time. But,
that’s not the way how you improve yourself to a well-connected expert.
[Body]
1.
First of all, shake off your face! Not to
be afraid of being refused since nobody is perfect. I would like to offer my
personal remedy for self-confidence. Give yourself some remarkable titles such
as “the best-looking girl in the office” (Actually I am the only female). Face
the mirror and give compliments to yourself. When building up enough courage
and confidence, you’ll be brave in a social situation.
2.
Successful social skills require smiles.
People tend to adore cheerful guys, rather than blue ones. Laughter is the
shortest distance between two people. During the conversation, body languages
also reveal a person’s thinking. For example, crossed arms could build up a
defensive wall and block out any new friends. Next time, try to expand your
body like doing catwalk. These movements can signify confidence and make companions
at ease. In addition to proper gestures, a sincere heart can warm up the
conversation as well. Always be honest to your partners; otherwise, they will
escape. The most important thing of all, try to avoid being "the King of Period", which means a person who often puts an end to a conversation
unintentionally.
--an ideal conversation--
A: Hey, haven’t seen you for a long time.
How’s everything going?
B: Pretty good! I went to Kenting and
enjoyed surfing last week. Do you want to see the photos?
A: Wow, and you buy a new phone! ...(go on
with the conversation)
--King of Period--
A: Hey, haven’t seen you for a long time.
How’s everything going?
B: Good! (and awkward silence…)
A: Uh! How’s your vacation? Did you take a
trip to somewhere?
B: None, can’t afford/no money! (and
awkward silence again…)
Unless you meet with a talkative person or
you want to ruin the conversation, it is better for you to answer the question
in detail.
3.
Once you grasp the essence of social
skills, you can step further to broaden your horizons. If you are lack of
opportunities to communicate, why not just join some [Toastmasters] clubs that
you are interested in? In a regular meeting, you can implement all the social
skills and earn the precious experiences.
[Conclusion]
All in all, social skills training can be
divided into 3 parts. Brave yourself first. During the conversation, you can
pay attention to sweet smiles, body languages, honest heart, and not to be the
king of period. Finally, you can take every chance to practice these social
skills.
Through meeting various friends, you can
build up your own social network in the daily life. Keep in touch with some of
them. Maybe next time they can do you a favor surprisingly.
